Athlete performance assessment(2.5 hours)
WHAT IS the athlete performance assessment?
The Athlete Performance Assessment is a full suite of comprehensive tests designed to give runners, cyclists, and triathletes a holistic overview of their fitness and to identify opportunities for improvement.
It includes:
VO2 max & lactate testing to identify your training zones (including zone 2 and threshold), VO2 max, and physiological strengths & weaknesses.
Running economy/cycling efficiency testing to provide a baseline to check if you’d benefit from any enhancement in these areas.
Fat/carbohydrate oxidation rates so you can more accurately estimate your fuelling requirements during training and racing.
Sweat test which measures your sweat rate (L/hour) and sodium loss (mg/L) so you can more accurately determine your hydrational requirements for training and racing.
InBody body composition scan to provide a baseline of your fat mass and muscle mass to check if there’s opportunities for enhancement in these areas.
Lower-body strength & power testing using VALD force plates to check for deficiencies in strength & power, which could contribute to improved running economy/cycling efficiency, or injury prevention.
A detailed summary of all results, including a simple 1-page snapshot summarising all the metrics collected above.
If you’re an individual racing events longer than 2 hours, or simply want a holistic overview of your physiology, this is the most comprehensive suite of tests that you’ll find in the private sector.
What's Involved the testing?
The 2.5 hour appointment involves the following:
Body composition scan. This takes 2 minutes and you will be fully clothed. You’ll receive body fat and muscle mass distribution data including normative data to compare to.
Strength testing (~30 minutes). You’ll complete an isometric squat, countermovement jump, squat jump, single-legged isometric calf raises, and single-legged hops. This will identify your max strength, power, and reactive strength so we can identify opportunities for improvement.
VO2 max & lactate test, sweat test (~30 minutes). You’ll start at a pace a little slower than your usual easy, long runs/rides. Every 4 minutes, we’ll increase by 1km/h or 30 watts until you cannot continue due to fatigue. Of this approximately 30-minute long test, you will only be exercising above your lactate threshold for approximately 8 minutes. People commonly report that it is an easier test than a 20-minute time trial as you are only working really hard for around 8 minutes. During this test, you’ll wear a mask to measure oxygen consumption and a sweat patch on your forearm and calf. At the conclusion of the test, we extract VO2 max data, running economy/cycling efficiency data, and fat/carb utilisation directly from the metabolic cart. We also directly measure the sodium concentration from your sweat patches and provide all information and recommendations on the day.
Consultation (~30 minutes). After accounting for warming up, setting up, transitioning between tests, and us interpreting the data, there will be approximately 30 minutes remaining to discuss your results in detail and provide recommendations for improvement.
Pricing
The Athlete Performance Assessment costs $599 inclusive of GST. This is $200 less than if you booked each individual appointment separately. Please note that medicare and private health rebates are not available for this appointment.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING? WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?
Please wear comfortable exercise clothing and bring a pair of runners, a towel, and drink bottle. Prior to the test, you should be well rested by avoiding strenuous physical activity in the preceding 24 hours, be well hydrated, and motivated to exercise maximally. Try to avoid large meals in the 2-3 hours leading up to the test, and try to simulate your race day nutrition preparation.
If scheduling a follow-up test, try to book in at a similar time and attempt to follow an identical preparation in the lead up to the test. This will improve the reliability of the test and more accurately determine your fitness improvements.
